Captain's Quarters Comments: Slimes At The Times

  • EricForhan · 1 year ago
Now we know why the NYT endorsed McCain ...
  • quickjustice · 1 year ago
Because the editors respected his sexual prowess, and were envious of it?
  • Bogey · 1 year ago
one of the worst uncorroborated, unproven stories I have ever seen.
Typically I have a healthy respect for the journalism quality at the NYT, but this is bad.
  • hunter_123 · 1 year ago
The NYT has lost credibility in this. And they had a credibility shortage already.
This is why it is important for those on the right to stay in the right, and to not over interpret every word of every speech.
  • mimsk · 1 year ago
    An affair? So what.

It's his private life, and has no affect on his ability to govern -- so we've been told.

And besides, indiscretions like that make the man more appealing. Right?
  • JAW · 1 year ago
There is going to be more. Do you suppose McCain could immunize himself early to avoid the late inning suprise that almost uppended W?
  • Lightwave · 1 year ago
To LOSE credibility, the NY Times would have to actually have some credibility left as a journalistic institution of integrity in the first place.

Which they most certainly do not.

The same Times that put this country in jeopardy with its revelations about methods and means for surveillance on our enemies is now in the tabloid business along with the Washington Post.

If this is the major skeleton in McCain's closet, then the Dems are desperate indeed. Let's see that journalistic integrity turned against Obama or better yet, Hillary Clinton. Surely they have more pressing issues that need to be investigated...but the liberal press can't do any better on McCain than an old story about...bitter ex-employees.

If THAT were a disqualifying mark in Washington politics, there wouldn't be anyone IN Washington politics to begin with.

C'mon Times, let's see some REAL stories about Rezko or Clinton and Obama ties to money from Jack Abramoff or Mr. Hsu and his ChiComm friends. Those are important stories that continue to be spiked.

But remember, we live in an era of "biased, conservative press".
  • pwgerr · 1 year ago
Wait a minute! this example demonstrates that these four big city newspaper journalists do have the gumption and commitment to do what it takes to get to the bottom of a story, at least as compared to their modern peers. See, it's because they talked to the people involved, which is way more than the St. Louis Post Dispatch reporter was willing to do! These people deserve and have earned Pulitzers!
  • MarkTheGreat · 1 year ago
Can I say I told you so yet?

I told you that the media only loved McCain as long as he was being a problem for other Republicans.

As soon as it came to a choice between McCain and a real Democrat, the media would turn on McCain.
  • quickjustice · 1 year ago
Thompson is returning to her pod at the Washington Post, where she learned her "craft". If true, the N.Y. Times has proven that McCain remains virile, or uses Dole's product. If false, then no one except McCain's wife knows. Coming from the N.Y. Times, which defended Bill Clinton's serial "indiscretions" as "private", this is rich! And from what I hear, the N.Y. Times's senior staff are in no position to run around complaining about infidelity and sexual immorality!

As for the "improper influence" allegation, Senators intervene with government agencies for constituents all the time. Even in Keating Five, McCain was absolved of the most serious charges. Three of his Democrat Senate colleagues were not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keating_Five

Bill Clinton rewarded one of them nonetheless. "DeConcini was appointed by President Bill Clinton in February, 1995 to the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation."

If anything, this silly story will help McCain by driving the base towards him.
  • njcommuter · 1 year ago
Next they'll complain that there's discrimination against the Left Wing Press because they have to make up their news, while the Right Wing gets it for free.
  • NoDonkey · 1 year ago
Why doesn't the New York Times have a comics section?

Because the entire paper is a cartoon.

This is a non-story from the New York National Inquirer-Star-Times.
  • TomB · 1 year ago
I have to brag a little:
In today's Day by Day comic strip FINALLY somebody noticed parallels between Obama message and Hitler's message!!!
Still a far cry from a NYT types, but I WAS FIRST, two or three days ago, over here, at Captain's Quarters!!
  • Mikey NTH · 1 year ago
epicene, that was classic, and your credibility is now on par with NYT.
  • harleycon5 · 1 year ago
Is anyone surprised by this? The far Left don't love McCain past the point he sticks it to Conservatives. But when comparing him to a truly radical Leftist, he will become the "Evil Conservative" (Just like they did with Bush) who must be stopped.

This is why we should have nominated a true Conservative, although at this point it is a mute point. If we are going to take the false attacks of the Liberal media, we might as well earn that right.
  • Squid_Shark · 1 year ago
It is also a moot point I imagine.
  • Other Ed · 1 year ago
The romantic part is just the fluff, the real damaging part of the story is the fact that McCain is using corporate jets of Paxon Communications at the time they have business in front of his Commerce Committee, especially when you've built a reputation as having "seen the light "after the Keating Five affair. It may not be illegal but it sure is a questionable ethical practice.

At least with incident, the Keating Five incident and the pressure he brought to bear to cover up Cindy McCain's theft and usage of drugs from her medical charity incident, it's obvious his ethical lapses are for friends and family, not money.
  • Rob · 1 year ago
Before you post things you really should do your homework so that you won't show your incredible ignorance to the entire cyber world. McCain reimbursed Paxon for his use of their jets and it has already been proven that he did not sway the F.C.C.'s vote in any way. He also voted against Paxon on numerous occasions and so your innuendo is severely flawed. By the, way are you a reporter for the Times? You are about as informed as one!
  • newton · 1 year ago
Sorry John... You live by the press, you die by the press.

Don't say we didn't tell you so!
  • AH_C · 1 year ago
    Memo to McVain:
So ya thot you could make it to the WH by reaching across to the Liberal's Liberals?
So ya thot you could make it to the WH with the endorsement of the liberal MSM?
    You've been bamboozled!

If you want to salvage your chances, ya need to put on the sackcloth and do the Prodigal Son routine. Here's a short list:
    1) Acknowledge you were sincerely wrong on some issues - you know what they are,
    2) Pledge to undo the legislations you supported that undermined conservative principles - proposing the corrective actions now while still a Senator is worth an extra 10 points,
    3) Start proposing your cabinet members and other key individuals - we want to see a significant # of conservatives named,

Do this ASAP and you'll improve your chances. Otherwise, a 3rd party conservative candidate become viable that will slip between you & the donks come Nov.
  • NoDonkey · 1 year ago
Any "conservative" who would run as a 3rd party candidate would engender the undying hatred of a good number of real conservatives, including myself.

The ones who don't want to torpedo our chances of keeping a neophyte pacifist, from becoming Commander in Chief.

After said "conservative" crashes and burns during the election, he's finished.
  • nightjar · 1 year ago
Wow, A non-Clinton Bimbo eruption. And she's good lookin' to boot. I'm wondering if McCain might make a good prez after all.
  • TJM · 1 year ago
But the Slimes has always told us that a president's sex life is unimportant in terms of governing- as long as you're a Democrat! The Slimes, the gift that keeps on giving.
  • nightjar · 1 year ago
It doesn't make a difference to me or democrats. It's you guys that go all wingnutty about sex. Didn't I say he might make a good president after all. On the other hand, the Immaculate Crusader against lobbyist pork may have stepped in it with this.

    How do you say drip-drip-drip.
  • Bogey · 1 year ago
not really. She looks like another fembot.
if you're going to stray, and get yourself something "different", then make it different!
  • Gaunilon · 1 year ago
This is good news. I was originally kind of concerned when the Times endorsed McCain. But now they're trying to smear him so he can't be all that bad.
  • niceoldguy · 1 year ago
please look at the "bug" on the times article about it being part of a group of stories about how the candidates came to be who they are. something about "long road." so saying this was all a ploy to "rehash" the Keating 5 stories is an absolutely ignorant statement (thus explaining its popularity on conservative talk shows). for a real drill down, push a couple of more google buttons and look at the article in the same series on Obama which goes back to his college drug use -- and quotes many people who imply Obama made a lot of it up to spice up his book. And what is wrong with rehashing Keating 5? A lot of people voting this time were little kids when it was in the news, and it is a major event in McCain's career by his own analysis.
  • Groucho · 1 year ago
Did a woman give McCain a hug? Who gives a damn? That's his personal business. Those of us outside your borders care about one thing - which of the candidates is least likely to bomb the crap out of somewhere?

On that one - please think carefully. The answer has consquences - maybe even for you.
  • mark l. · 1 year ago
"There is going to be more."
    JAW

Is there going to be more? I think the NYT knew that they had nothing to follow up with, but hoped tht they would be able to catch McCain in a lie with other corroborating evidence or testimony. There is none.

Personally, even if true, it matters little. I'm kinda happy about it. McCain's number one problem isn't his libido, but his ego. John needed a dose of humility, and he also needed a reason to fight.

McCain has made no attempt to move right, despite criticsim from the right. Now that he falls into the scope of TNR/NYT, it may prove that his disgust for their actions is what brings him home.

The only thing that could bring conservatives to him in the general election would be a serious fight between him and the left. His unwillingness to provoke now means little, as the leftist media has already started launching salvos.

I'm a conservative with a ton of contempt for Mac, but I had already decided to vote for him. The clincher was when I heard the lib talking point-"It will be Bush's 3rd term". Hardly, but if they believe it, i can only imagine the weeping and wailing that will occur in 9 months.

The enemy of my enemies is my friend...
  • JoeB131 · 1 year ago
At McCain's Age, I think the Kinhedo factor sets in...

at 71, what Kin He Do?

    Seriously, this is garbage.
  • Tom Maguire · 1 year ago
An interesting sidebar - Timesman Stephen Labaton got a couple of frontpagers about the McCain-Paxson-FCC letters story in Jan 2000; the "scandal" fizzled out back then after a McCain document dump in which he released all his letters to regulatory agencies on behalf of anyone and everyone.

But he is back, fired up, and ready to go.
  • Bogey · 1 year ago
    be FAIR though Captain.

    perhaps you didn't see THIS?

  • epicene · 1 year ago
Do you really imagine that, should he become Prez, Methuselah McCain will survive for long? You'd be more productive trying to ensure that a more sensible candidate is VP, "a heartbeat away" coz McC doesn't have many left.
If you need a comparison, HW was Raygun's VP because it was never intended that Bonzo survive the assassination but the dingbat used a .22 pistol which didn't even kill Bradley though it hit him in the brain. Hiting Bonzo's brain would have been totally irrelvant, as well as nigh impossible, the patsy was no marksman.
  • Diggs · 1 year ago
Speaking of Raygun, did you notice the direct hit on the "disabled satellite" with the "star wars" missile? Yep, that ol' coot had it right twenty years ago when scientists worldwide were pooh-pooing the idea of "hitting a bullet with a bullet".
So, tell me again about his brain? More intellect that the average rocket scientist?
    Thought so.
  • sven10077 · 1 year ago
erm you mean "Brady" I'm pretty sure.....

Always charming to see the "enlightened" showing why they should be "alighted"....
  • E1701 · 1 year ago
    Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

Are you quite sane? You are suggesting that Bush Sr. conspired to assassinate Regan from *before* the convention, somehow managing to get himself appointed VP? And nobody ever found out about this, or found any evidence of this in the slightest?

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but what are you smoking?

Anyhow, McCain's mother has been showing up at a lot of his appearances, standing behind him during his speeches - and she's 94. So I wouldn't be that confident that McCain is going to kick off anytime soon. Besides, people like you said the same thing about him in 2000, remember?
  • harleycon5 · 1 year ago
Epicene, you must be the darling of your Leftist friends with your colorful but hateful language. And you apparently don't know that a .22 caliber round can be quite deadly, as .22 and .25 caliber "pop guns" are the choice of many gang-bangers. Further, Ronald Reagan was actually clinically "dead" for a brief period of time during surgery, a point that was not disclosed for obvious reasons.
I also don't like your inferance that McCain will be assassinated. Your rhetoric is deplorable, however I am sure some on the far Right will say similar things about Barack Obama. I guess "great minds" (note sarcasm) think alike, right?
