Captain's Quarters Comments: The Eggnog Factor

  • essucht · 2 years ago
Thompson is the pretty obvious choice. Beer, eggnog, whatever, you know the converstaion would be interesting and enlightening.

Bill Clinton might be interesting too, but come on, is he going to share his good stories with Hillary around?

Edwards would tell you stories you both knew weren't true and bother you about your choice of drink, food, car, house, etc while eating imported foie gras and telling his stretch SUV limo driver to keep the engine running.

Obama would just sit around looking for a halo in his reflection.

Romney would be polite and friendly...but it would feel like having a drink with your boss.

Huckabee would tell you to stop drinking.

McCain might get a bit...rowdy...and not in a good way.

And Guilani would tell you how they make better eggnog in NYC now, thanks to him.
  • Natrium · 2 years ago
Heck, McCain would get rowdy even without the eggnog. After all, I saw how he treated a crowd of Senior citizens a few years ago when they asked him about his amnesty proposal...
  • RBMN · 2 years ago
He IS a senior citizen. Senior status probably doesn't impress him too much.
  • dsinope · 2 years ago
The poll is distorted by Mitt's alcohol free status. I support him, and view Rudy as a close second choice. But since we're talking egg nog and not my actual vote, I'd take Rudy first.

It would also be interesting to hang out with Mrs. Giuliani or Mrs. Thompson after imbibing a few.
  • ClydeS · 2 years ago
Neither of those fine ladies has anything on Mrs. Kucinich!
  • Tom_Shipley · 2 years ago
Yeah, how the hell did that happen?
  • carol H · 2 years ago
Mrs Kucinich is a way far left loon. Where does she come from anyway- somewhere in Europe? Think she'd be with him if he were not an in the news congressional loon?

One might opine that Thompson's stud status and more recent fatherhood belies the media portrayal of him as lazy.
Doesn't look like too many here hold the Hildebeast or Haircut with legs in much high regard.
  • newton · 2 years ago
Mrs Kucinich? She may probably offer Silk nog. (Yikes!)
  • captained · 2 years ago
That's all I can have! (Lactose intolerance stinks, quite literally.)
  • KathyfromAustin · 2 years ago
I agree with you on Clinton.

Several years ago my daughter and I were at a nursery in Austin on a Sunday morning. This place is in a very upscale part of our town and is known for having a huge number of pink flamingos displayed. Three cars pulled up and curiously blocked the entrance. Out comes Bill, Hillary and an entourage to buy some flamingos. Bill stayed and talked to the nursery customers and was amazingly charismatic and engaging. I didn't agree with his politics, but I have to say I could see why he was such a popular figure. Hillary, on the other hand, was off-putting and rude. She stayed away from the small crowd and complained over and over to Bill to get back in the car and go. She came across as a real hag. The two could not have been more diametrically opposed in terms of temperament and ability to woo a crowd.
  • Ray_in_MPLS · 2 years ago
Before I have a beer (I HATE eggnog!) with any of the canidates I have to know: who's paying the tab?
  • Skip · 2 years ago
    The Federal Government, of course.
  • ClydeS · 2 years ago
Which means you and me, of course.
  • Skip · 2 years ago
Just think of it as another Christmas present from Hillary.
  • azlibertarian · 2 years ago
    What? No Ron Paul?

    I kid. I kid.
  • essucht · 2 years ago
Well, might be interesting to hear about how Fort Sumter was really an inside job...
  • KHarn · 2 years ago
Maybe you didn't know that Lincoln had ordered nine warships to South Carolina and Florida, which resulted in Fort Sumter being fired on?

Anyway, for my vote, I chose the man who I would just want to talk and drink with, without politics!
  • unclesmrgol · 2 years ago
So it was an inside job?
  • pk · 2 years ago
the guy at LGF ran a poll on who you would LEAST want for president and ron paul won that one by a landslide.

i think that its still running, you can get in if you're quick.

    ho, ho, ho:

i don't care who you are fat man get your reindeer off of my roof, they'll make it leak.

  • WS · 2 years ago
If the candidates wives were included, I would have to say Dennis kucinich
  • ClydeS · 2 years ago
Since she's British-born, we wouldn't have to worry about her wanting to run for president later, unlike some previous First Ladies I could name.

Then again, we're more likely to get hit by a meteorite than to see a Dennis Kucinich presidency in our lifetlime.
  • Original Pechanga · 2 years ago
John McCain has to my first choice. I'd love to have a conversation about his time in prison in N. Vietnam and what he thought about the war in general. I have letters from my father to my mother from two tours in Vietnam and I find it interesting to see his perspective change from 66 to his 71 tour.
Also, since I'm interested in Indian Affairs, I'd like to discuss his views on civil rights for individual Native Americans. Currently, in 21st century California, casino tribes are eliminating more Indians that the white man did last century. Politicians are turning a blind eye to civil rights violations because they are getting contributions from gaming tribes. My tribe, the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians in Temecula, CA have shrunk our tribe by 25% so they can get more casino profits. Gov. Schwarzenegger is trying to push expanded gaming to four tribes and not allowing the people of CA to vote. Since Senator McCain is on th Indian Affairs committee, I'd love to know what their real focus is: Money, or doing what's right.
After 40 years since Vietnam, would the Senator think doing what's right is the way to go?
  • ClydeS · 2 years ago
The Ronulans aren't going to be happy that you left their man out, Captain! And what about Kucinich?

I put Fred, McCain and Giuliani, because I thought they'd be interesting to talk with, and Barack because if I had to talk to a Democrat, I'd prefer it to be someone likable. I can't put the other Democrat presidential candidates in that category. And I don't want to hear the 10% of Bill's conversation that would be about Hillary (the other 90% would be about Bill, of course).
  • AH_C · 2 years ago
Yeah, and what of Duncan Hunter? He was quite outgoing and opinionated (no ambiguous PC speak) at a luncheon last year. As for Barack, I agree...might even be an opportunity to help him see the light that only self-determination can lead to economic freedom.
  • JohnFNotKerry · 2 years ago
Fred wins with me because I think he would have the most rounded life and the best stories.
  • Jazz · 2 years ago
I had to go with Fred. I won't vote for Fred, but he looks like the most fun to chat with. The rest of them are kind of a bunch of stiffs.
  • hadsil · 2 years ago
    Edwards, Giuliani, Romney, Thompson

I thought for a moment of Bill Clinton, but I see him a wise guy who likes to get away with stuff. I wouldn't want to know him. For Edwards, I have a nagging topic from the 2004 campaign. He complained Republicans chose New York City for their convention to hype 9/11. The reality is Mayor Bloomberg invited both political parties precisely to show solidarity with New York City and prove its recovery and safety. The Republicans immediately said yes while the Democrats balked because the Republicans would be there.

The others because I like them; I really, really like them.
  • Del_Dolemonte · 2 years ago
I actually met and got to chat for a couple of minutes with Rudy here in NH a couple of weeks ago-I just happened to be in a garden nursery when he showed up for a meet and greet. Very nice guy-I mentioned to him that I had lived in NYC and he immediately started asking what were my favorite neighborhoods, restaurants, etc. He seemed genuinely interested in talking to me.
  • MikeA · 2 years ago
I picked Fred because I assumed the questions was about having the drink and conversation at my house. Fred is the only one of these people I would even allow into my house.
  • Ken Hahn · 2 years ago
I picked Thompson. I might consider Bill if he had ever told the truth in his adult life.
  • Roy · 2 years ago
Romney would not drink "egg nog" and therefore this is a very flawed poll, unless someone wants to catch Romney breaking his church rules...
  • Jay · 2 years ago
Shouldn't Huckabee's be alcohol free too? He is a preacher.
  • Jay · 2 years ago
I'm going to assume you left Ron Paul out to keep the poll accurate, as many Paul bots were sure to show up and skew it. I voted for Fred here as who I would honestly enjoy a beer with, but...to be honest...if Ron Paul had been on the list....for real. He would have to be a fun drunk.
  • Rose · 2 years ago
    None of the above.

It would be nice to have eggnog with Duncan Hunter, Ann Coulter, Chuck Yeager, Sean Hannity, Oliver North, Franklin Graham, Michelle Malkin, Tom Tancredo, Tom McClintock, Tom DeLay, James Robison.

The people in this poll wouldn't like me.
  • Karen in Michigan · 2 years ago
If you are expanding the poll, I think Newt Gingrich or Rush would be facsinating to talk to, one on one. I would also like to talk to ole "W" himself. My good friend in Austin ran in his social circle when he was Guv, and she said he is really likeable.
  • DayTrader · 2 years ago
    Memorable meals for me

Small private dinner (6 couples) with GWB and Jeb Bush back when GWB was with the Rangers
10 couple dinner when Rush was still in NYC and married to Marta
6 or 8 couple dinner with Johnny Carson
Bar hopping in Honolulu with Bette Midler
  • Karen in Michigan · 2 years ago
Hey trader, c'mon, there are some STORIES here, do tell!!!!
  • Del_Dolemonte · 2 years ago
We'd have to confirm this with CQ commenter kauaiboy, but I think Bette spends most of her Hawaii time on that island now, which has a much more "sedate" nightlife than Honolulu does.

I'd want to take armed bodyguards with me if I were to go barhopping in Honolulu these days anyway (paging Duane "Dog" Chapman?)
  • DayTrader · 2 years ago
This was back in the Nam timeframe when she was a singer on the north shore of Oahu at Don Ho's other place that he owned. Way before she was 'discovered'
  • DayTrader · 2 years ago
Actually she had already been discovered but just wasn't as big a star as she got to be later and it was during those in between days for her till it all really took off for her.
  • DayTrader · 2 years ago
I know what you mean, heck back then you could sit out on the beach sweet talking the lady you met that night till the sun came up if you wanted to.

I sure wouldn't recommend that after sun down now.
  • michael Reynolds · 2 years ago
Can I choose Mrs. Kucinich and Mrs. Thompson?
  • clever_hans · 2 years ago
I'm glad Ron Paul was not included. I think it was Sinclair Lewis, or was it C.S. Lewis? I forget, but whoever it was said: when the anti-Christ comes, he'll be a nutter with goofy disciples who believe 9-11 was an inside job.
  • Math_Mage · 2 years ago
If either of those people were alive to know about 9/11, this comment might make sense.
  • Whitehall · 2 years ago
I'd want to know what Fred knows about energy. His campaign literature on the subject is uncharacteristically vague and full of platitudes. I'm in the energy business and I think this is a VERY serious issue. The recent Energy Bill was little help and maybe a sep backwards.
  • clever_hans · 2 years ago
I picked Obama -- seriously, I did -- because he has a great voice. He sounds like President David Palmer on the hit series 24.

The sense of confidence he exudes beats the heck out of Hillary's shrill, sometimes affected tone.

As to the republicans, whatever. I sure hope they don't go the religious nutter route. We'll get creamed. So that's another reason I picked Obama. I'm hedging my bets, so that if he wins, I'll have an inside line to the Oval Office. Yessss!
  • Bill_M · 2 years ago
Tough one. Had to think about it a little. I'm not all that fasinated with Bill Clinton (and I interpreted 2 for 1 meaning Hillary comes along). Under that assumption, I'd have to take a pass... (I was stationed in Arkansas from 1970 - 1974.)

I picked John McCain and Fred Thompson. Fred was easy. He has that "folksy" feel to him. I could see sitting around with him with shoes kicked off, feet on the hassock, and shootin' the s**t. He's got a good ole boy feel to him.

John McCain doesn't have that feel, but he is an interesting man. Perhaps it's his military background. I'm biased, being retired USAF and Vietnam era. Hard to describe this, but military types have a "brotherhood" aspect to their relationships. We tend to make firm connections and brook no bull***t. Phonys needn't apply. John McCain is no phony. He's been there, more than most. (One reason why Kerry didn't catch on with vets, by the way. He was phony through & through.)

None of the rest are "comfortable" enough.

Topics? With McCain and Thompson, just about anything. I'm envisioning a BS session which means any and every topic is within the realm of possibility.
  • DayTrader · 2 years ago
I am a retired submariner...Fred and I could talk about the real deal stuff behind the "Hunt for Red October".
  • SDthepoliticalpost · 2 years ago
It looks like Fred has it by a mile. That's probably because of his good ol' boy persona and sharp sense of humor. I chose Fred and Rudy. I've seen Rudy in person and he has a very engaging personality.

I would have chosen Bill Clinton but it was 2 for 1 so I took a pass.
  • sashal · 2 years ago
I'll bet that the most fun would be to have conversation with Huckabee. His sense of humor and wit beats everybody
  • StevePoling · 2 years ago
I suspect that Mr. Huckabee would be as much a tea-totaler as Mr. Romney.

Of the candidates, I think Mr. Thompson seems the most personable. I'd quiz him about Hollywood and Watergate and Federalism. Are the guys in Hollywood as nutso lefty as things appear? What's his Kevin Bacon number? Was Nixon really as corrupt as the left lets on or did he just get caught for doing stuff Kennedy and Roosevelt got away with? Then I'd ask him for a remedial tutorial on what this Federalism thing means.

McCain might be fun if we can talk about airplanes and flying without talking about being a POW.
  • RBMN · 2 years ago
Fred Thompson (In the Line of Fire) to Clint Eastwood to Kevin Bacon (Mystic River)
  • Tom_Shipley · 2 years ago
I picked Bill (I personally see the 2-for-1 provision as Bill has 2 eggs nogs for every 1 I have) because, heck, he's the safest bet for an interesting conversation. If it were just a straight up conversation about politics, I'd pick Obama, because I think he's pretty passionate about it. To me he seems sincere about what he's trying to do. It may be less an ego thing for him than the others.
  • keemo · 2 years ago
Hell is going to freeze over, I actually agree with a Shipley post...
  • Tom_Shipley · 2 years ago
So that's why the temp dropped 30 degrees last night...
  • captained · 2 years ago
Nah. It always does that in Minnesota....
  • Dan · 2 years ago
    Fred. Because Fred invented eggnog.
  • charles dorfman · 2 years ago
Fred Thompson...I love a great cigar with my martini, err, egg nog,

John Mccain...I have great respect for his POW and Islamofascist War creds. "John, tell me the truth. As POTUS and in control of a high value terrorist, wouldn't you screw that vice on his head yourself if it meant saving the lives of thousands of Americans?
  • Hal · 2 years ago
Well, I reckon I would drink a brew with Fred, but no eggnog for me, thanks, Clinton, nope...no twofer for me. Edwards, nah, he'd be sippin on a mint julip or something, with a flower perched atop one of his ears. As for the rest, maybe Rudi, but the others I would respectfully decline.

Merry Christmas Capt and may you and yours have a prosperous New Year.

    Hal
  • stackja1945 · 2 years ago
Fred Thompson, I would ask him about his time in the Senate, his time in Hollywood, and his first
few days in the White House.
  • dk · 2 years ago
I'd want to ask Rudy why he f'd up his campaign so badly that we now have this clown Huckabee rising.
  • Kate · 2 years ago
I don't drink, but I might make an exception to lift one with Fred. :)
  • tacodawn · 2 years ago
Right now Mitt's my pick for Prez but I think I'd like to have an eggnog with Fred then Rudy.
  • TexasFred · 2 years ago
I'd like to have a glass of bourbon with FDT and I'd ask him, man to man, why aren't you fired up?? Why don't you get a little excitement into the run?? Why did you go to the Univision thing in Miami, if they don't speak English, likely as not they aren't legal to vote?? Why did you break so many hearts by going there??

That's enough for the 1st glass...

2nd glass I'd ask, is Jerri as good as she looks like she is?? :)
  • jim · 2 years ago
I think mI would talk to Fred about anything but politics. Afterall, if you read anything you have to know his stand on just about everything. I think Tennessee sour mash versus scotch whiskey might be a good topic.
  • poodlemom · 2 years ago
I chose Rudy; I know he'll know the best place to get a "slice" to go along with the beer.
  • brightwinger · 2 years ago
I picked Fred but then my drug damaged brain recalled that I was once a hippie, so he'd probably have to punch me.

If I survived, I'd love to ask him for the inside skinny on the Watergate hearings.

The guy is a huge genius when he writes something on a topic of merit. As I am a fellow writer, Fred glides through complex topics in an elegant shorthand that sometimes leaves me nearly breathless.

Come to think of it, it's no easy task to put a governor behind bars. You gotta be damn good to carry that off. So Fred is a guy who understands the law, the constitution, and he's got a smokin' hot...presidential aura. (I know what you were thinkin' ...I was thinkin' it, too.)

To see my endorsement go to http://1brightwinger.blogspot.com/2007/12/fred-...
  • beanieville · 2 years ago
    do you guys invest?
  • Scooter_in_Atlanta · 2 years ago
I picked Huckabee because I would like for him to explain to me why illegal aliens who [obviously] entered the country illegally and in violation of our laws are more worthy of the title "God's Children" than the millions around the world who are patiently standing in line [and thus playing by the rules] for the privilege of becoming Americans.
  • MSimon · 2 years ago
I'd ask Fred if Federalism applies to the War On Drugs since it is obvious by the Alcohol Prohibition Amendment that the Federal Government has no power to prohibit intoxicating substances.
  • Dr_Bob · 2 years ago
Fred impresses me as a "folksy" non-hyper ordinary fellow with which I could have a good two-way chat.

The rest seem to be rather self-important which would most likely have a lot of talking at me, not communicating with me.
  • Dave · 2 years ago
Non-alcoholic my ass. If I'm going to have to sit and listen to any of these people blather, that stuff better be 50/50 nog to booze ratio at minimum.
  • brightwinger · 2 years ago
    LOL! Too funny!
  • NahnCee · 2 years ago
I chose Thompson because I think he'd have better insider Hollywood gossip. There's probably good DC gossip, too, but it doesn't interest me as much and I can't see any candidate spilling anything interesting over a first eggnog.
  • keemo · 2 years ago
I could have some fun with Bill, however I have to pick Fred for this one since I would have to share some time with Hillary.

I worked for and with many Hollywood folks for 20+ years; it would be nice to talk with a Conservative who somehow managed to survive (thrive) is such a nutter-Liberal environment. One question (topic) I would have for Fred; how many "Hollywood closet Conservatives" did you party with while in the business? I worked in the homes of several, therefore I know they exist.
  • bassman · 2 years ago
Rudy; Ask him about taking down the MOB and the first WTC bombing. Fred for over all life expierences. With a big fat Cigar!
  • Rovin · 2 years ago
Why these "closet conservatives" refuse to come out and stand on their principals is beyond my guess, although I'm sure it's the money in the long run. Gary Senise is a true hollywood patriot among others. I think Fred would have much to share with a bourbon and an egg nog chaser.
  • keemo · 2 years ago
The times, they are a-changin Rovin... I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Hollywood split up and relocate to several other states in the not so distant future. The days of John Wayne type "real men" would certainly be a welcomed event; enough with Sean Penn/George Clooney girlymen types. The first "real conservative" to come out of the closet and make an enlightening movie about how great America is, will be the telling sign that the Spielberg Liberal reign over the film industry has seen it's last days. John Travolta just might be the one...
